DELTA TAU DELTA THE Delta Tau Delta Fraternity was founded at Bethany College late inDecember, 1859, the exact date not being known on account of the lossof the archives during the Civil War, so that the fraternity has always recog-nized January 1st, 1860, as the date of its origin. In the early days of the fraternitys life its government was in the handsof the undergraduate chapters, one chapter, known as the Alpha, exercisingthe chief authority ; four chapters, the Theta at Bethany College, the Gammaat Jefferson (now Washington and Jefferson) College, the Mu at Ohio Wes-leyan University, and the Alpha at Allegheny College, were in turn the AlphaChapter. In 1873 the fraternity was divided, for administrative purposes, into fourdivisions, the South, the West, the North and the East, in the order of histor-ical precedence, the government of each representing in miniature thegovernment of the general fraternity.
