Editorial use only Entomologist listening to the mating sounds of glassy winged sharpshooters (Homalodisca vitripennis). Homalodisca vitripennis is a species of leafhopper which can carry the bacteria that cause Pierce's disease, a disease which infects and damages vineyards. This is part of a study into the use of certain frequencies of sound to disrupt glassy winged sharpshooter communication to prevent them from mating. Doing so would reduce populations, and by extension reduce the spread of Pierce's disease, limiting economic damage. Photographed at the Crop Diseases, Pests and Genetics Research Unit, California, USA.
