Autumn trees view East River Brooklyn Bridge, towards Manhattan skyscrapers Pier 17, from Fulton Ferry Park, Brooklyn Dumbo, NY

The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the US. With a total length of 1825 m (5989 ft), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1903. The main span, between the Neo-Gothic limestone granite towers, is m ( ft) long, with a clearance of 41m (135 ft). There are six lanes for cars and a separate upper deck walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. The builders made the bridge 4-6 times stronger than necessary, but, because of its age, there are restrictions on lorries and buses.
