Francis I of France (François Ier) (1494 – 1547) was the first King of France from the Angoulême branch of House of Valois.
King of France, born in Cognac (1494), died at Rambouillet (1547) Son of Charles of Valois and Louise of Savoy. Succeeded Louis XII, defeated the Swiss at Marignano (1515), counterbalanced the Empire of Charles V. He unsuccessfully sought the support of Henry VIII of England at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, was captured in Pavia (1525), and signed the Treaty of Crépy (1544). Was the great benefactor of the arts and of the Italian Renaissance, built the first hunting lodge in Chambard.
