SerPiero charged his son to paint something onit, but without telling him where it camefrom. Perceiving that the shield was warpedand very roughly cut, Leonardo straightenedit out by heat, and sent it to a turnerto plane and polish. After giving it a coat-ing of plaster, and arranging it to his satis-faction, he bethought him of a subject suitable for painting uponit—something that should be of a nature to strike terror to anywho might attack the owner of this piece of armour, after themanner of the Gorgon of old.
