The engine, when it is seton the foundation, is not to rest upon the concrete itself but willhave, between it and the concrete, a bed of cement grout (equal partsof sand and cement, about one-half inch thick. This method of settingin grout insures the accurate placing of the engine and at the same timeprovides a full and even bearing for the engine bed-plate. Whenplacing the foundation forms, therefore, it is well to have the topedge of the sides straight and level and located one-half inch below thelevel that the bed plate of the engine is to assume. The form isthen filled with the concrete to the point of overflowing. The next step isto support theholding - down orfoundation bolts inthe proper positionin the foundationopening.
