Global carbon monoxide levels. Map showing the mean concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) in the Earth's atmosphere between the 22nd and 29th September 2002. Low concentrations are dark blue, through pale blue, white and pink to deep red for high concentrations. Areas of high concentration are found in South America, South Africa and Indonesia, where slash-and-burn agriculture burns large amounts of biomass. Data obtained using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on the NASA Aqua Spacecraft.
