Self Cleaning Railway Switch. A SELF cleaning switch for street railway service hasjust been patented by Wm. A. Lee, of Peoria,Ills. Its principal will be readily understood fromthe accompanying cut. The bottom of switch tonguehas oblong and diamond shaped lugs, which slide on themetal cross bars D, and readily cause any dirt whichmay gather in the switch to drop into an iron box beneath, which may be connected with sewer where desired. Itis claimed this reduces the work of track cleaners, as alldirt is cut and easily made to drop into the box belowwhenever switch is turned. The whole may also be used. PURIFIER FOR STATIONARY BOILER. The American Wire Nail Company, of Anderson, the w-ater is ver^- dirty, have had two on trial forfive months, and have recently equipped their entire bat-tery of ten boilers with them. It is not claimed for the purifier that it will absolutelypurify all waters, as there are occasional waters where thisis impossible, except by methods which are so expensive asto be an actual prohibition on their use, but setting asidethe few occasional exceptions of this kind, and which arefully conceded b}- engineers as phenominal, these puri-fiers work with results that are highly satisfactory. Bytheir use it may confidently be expected that the life ofthe flues will be fully twice that steaming under the samecircumstances without them, not to mention the saving inexpense of washing.
