I have another cocoon of this speciessimilarly disposed within an inveited glass tumbler, under which themother had been confined. She attached herself to the bottom of theglass (the top when inverted), and, as is the custom of her kind, hungthere back downward until the period of cocooning. (Fig. 57.) Not long after she died, and her driedup form is partly shown inthe drawing. The spotsupon the glass represent thefjoints of attachment for thesupporting lines of the co-coon, and are little pats ofadhering silk. Sometimes cocoons arefound laid against a leafwhich has been drawnaround it, as at Figs. 58and 59, reminding one ofthe manner in which cer-tain lepidopterous larvaeprotect themselves before they pass into the pupa state. When this sortof protection is secured for the eggs, viz., a leafy covering around theegg pad, no further envelope is added, precisely as when the eggs arelaid upon the under side of bark and Fig. 62. Cocoon of Epeira domicUiorum, woven upon a pine tree. 88 AMERICAN SPIDERS AND THEIR SPINNINGWORK.
