Airborne dust research. Instrument spar inside the Solar Dome installation which monitors the effect of dust on sunlight at the Mauna Loa observatory, Hawaii, USA. The spar follows the position of the Sun as it moves across the sky during the day. The solar radiation is measured by instruments on the spar such as pyrheliometers and sunphotometers. Dust from volcanic eruptions which reaches the upper atmosphere may cause climate change by blocking sunlight.
