A detachment of it was with the Red Riverexpedition, in 1864. Major-General James Birdseye McPherson( 1853) was born in Sandusky, Ohio,November 14, 1828. He practised engineering inthe Government employ and also taught it atWest Point. When the war broke out, he raised aforce of engineers, and later he was aide to Major-General Halleck. In December, 1862, he was givencommand of the Seventeenth Corps. His services 168].
