White weatherboarded cottages built in the 1700s form a harmonious group in steeply-rising rising Mermaid Street in Rye, East Sussex, England, UK. The picturesque cobbled street with its half-timbered Mermaid Inn, rebuilt in 1420 after a fire, is one of the most photographed streets in southern England.

Rye, East Sussex, England, UK: white-painted and weatherboarded cottages built in the 1700s line cobbled Mermaid Street, one of the most photogenic and most photographed streets in southern England. The sharply sloping street, named after the timber-framed Mermaid Inn, rebuilt in 1420 after a fire, attracts large numbers of summer visitors and is one of the most sought-after addresses in this picturesque town, which in the medieval era was one of the Cinque Ports, a confederation of coastal towns in south-east England. The cottages at nos. 21-29 Mermaid Street form a harmonious group and are all protected as Grade II Listed structures of special historical or architectural interest. Christmas Cottage (no. 25, left) is built on three levels, with its extra storey partly below ground level because the hill rises so steeply. The facade features a hooded front entrance and an oriel window with leaded lights on two floors.
