Monochrome historic photograph, at Ackerstrasse, showing 1963 Berlin Wall barrier dividing Ackerstrasse from Bernauer Strasse
An information panel (right of shot), entitled 'Ackerstrasse in Divided Berlin', reads: 'After the wall was built, the East German police locked up the doors exiting onto Bernauer Strasse. The windows were gradually bricked up after a number of residents used them to flee. In September most of the residents were forced to leave their apartments and move elsewhere. In late 1965, construction troops tore down the corner building and the building at Ackerstrasse 42 to make room for the border strip that was being created. In 1984/85, when the border area was being redeveloped, building and the side wings of the neighbouring buildings on Ackerstrasse were also torn down.' This photograph, in front of the gable end of an Ackerstrasse apartment block, shows bricked up buildings and the 3rd Generation Wall of 1963 blocking off Ackerstrasse from West Berlin.
