Differential scanning calorimetry. Close-up of a sample being tested in a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). DSC is a technique used to measure the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a sample compared to a reference material. The main application of DSC is in studying the energy changes or heat capacity changes that occur during phase transitions, such as melting or exothermic decomposition.
