Grove Gilbert (1843-1918), US geologist, on a horse. Gilbert surveyed the Rocky Mountains and published 'The Geology of Henry Mountains' (1877). He was appointed Senior Geologist for the US Geological Survey (USGS) after its creation in 1879 and worked there until his death. He also worked in planetary geology and the Gilbert Award was named in his honour.
