Drawing of a homunulus from Dutch mathematician and physicist Nicolaas Hartsoeker's (1656-1725) 1694 book Essay de Dioptrique. Hartsoeker proposed the concept of the homunculus, where a tiny but complete being existed within spermatozoa (or animalcules as they were then known).
