Eye examination. Ophthalmologist uses a slit-lamp to examine the eye of a man. At left, the ophthalmologist looks into the eyepiece of this illuminating ophthalmic microscope while the patient's head is braced and held still. The instrument directs a fine beam of light into the eye and magnifying lenses allow the ophthalmo- logist to explore the spot where the beam falls. The conjunctiva, iris, cornea and internal lens of the eye can be examined. Some serious eye disorders, such as glaucoma, are symptomless in the early stages and can only be detected through this type of eye examination.
