Bailgate Post has announced that Post Office Ltd is to close 2,500 post offices across the country

Government has announced that Post Office Ltd is to close 2,500 post offices across the country and to set up 500 outreach services to mitigate closures in some areas. The closure programme is now underway and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008. This will leave a post office network of approximately 11,700 post offices once the closure programme is finished. The post office network lost more than £200 million in 2006/7, and there are four million fewer customer visits every week compared with 2 years ago. Rural and urban deprived post offices have been hit hard by the decline in Government business. Revenue from Government transactions fell by £168 million in 2005/6. Postwatch recognises that the closure of a post office is never good news for the customers concerned. However, we also recognise the post office network is unsustainable in its current form. Postwatch therefore supports managed change to secure the long-term future of the post office network. See our full response to DTI's consultation on the closure programme.
