The soft chancrebeing readily auto-inoculable, an ulcer is liable toform on any part with which the secretion from thesore comes into contact. The slightest abrasion orexcoriation is sufficient to enable the virus to gainaccess to the tissues. Thus, chancres are often seenon the mens Yeneris and in the neighbourhood ofthe anus, on the pubes and lower part of the ab-domen, and on the inside of the thighs. They arealso found on the nipple, the lips, the tongue, thecheeks, and the j&ngers. They have also been foundon the scalp, but chancres on this part are usually ofthe indurated kind. A soft chancre left to itself, usually continues forfrom two to four weeks, without showing any ten-dency to heal. At first, indeed, it often tends tospread and burrow, and to invade neighbouringtissues. This process generally ceases during thethird week, when the swelling, soreness, and secre-tion gradually diminish, and the
