Crested Caracara in animal rescue centre, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, Central America

Polyborus plancus (or Caracara cheriway according to the AOU), is a bird of prey in the family Falconidae. It is the only living member of the genus Polyborus, following the extinction of the Guadalupe Caracara. Unlike the Falco falcons in the same family, the caracaras are not fast-flying aerial hunters, but are rather sluggish and often scavengers.
