He was himselfmustered out of service, June 2, 1865, and presentedwith a medal of honor by the Congress of the UnitedStates. Returning to Pittsburgh, he began the practiceof his profession and rapidly rose to prominence, beingelected district attorney for Allegheny county, October,1868. Failing health, however, in the course of a fewyears obliged him to abandon active law practice, andhe was appointed gas inspector of Allegheny county byCourt of Common Pleas No. i. In 1870 he was ap-pointed major-general of the Pennsylvania State Guard. <^^ \ ^.
