Born at Maiden, Essex county, England, in 1728 ; entered the army while a youth ;came to America; commanded the Kings Independent Company in New York;stationed at Halifax, Nova Scotia, with the rank of Major; joined Braddocks ill-fated expedition, in 1755, and was shot through the body at the disastrous defeat ofthe battle of Monongahela; recovered, and served to the close of the French andIndian War; then settled on an estate, called Travelers Rest, in Berkeleycounty, West Virginia; entered the American service at the beginning of the Revo-lution ; Brigadier-General and Adjutant-General Continental Army, June 17, 1775;Major-General Continental Army, May 16, 1776 ; defeated the British army under Bur-goyne, at Saratoga, New York, October 17, 1777 ; made President Board of War,November, 1777 ; appointed to the command of the armyi in
