Grey sky portrait shot from Catalan Wharf towards the Middle Warehouse (1831, centre background) and Merchants Warehouse (dating to about 1827, left of shot), both now apartment and office blocks. This part of the Canal Basin is known as the Castlefield Junction, the 1805 trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal entering from the north-west (left of shot), the 1765 Bridgewater Canal entering from the south-east (right of shot).
