False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the human intestine, in the act of dividing. The shadow technique used in this TEM reveals hair-like pili fringing the cell wall; a certain type of pili, the sex pili, are involved in the transfer of DNA during bacterial conjugation. Under certain conditions E. coli bacteria may become harmful & cause infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. This bacterium is in the early stages of binary fission, the process by which the organism divides in two. Magnification: x4700 at 35mm size, x9400 at 6x7cm size.
