By such, our efforts in the patient, tedious work ofsearching out, and gathering up into shape from rare old tornes of print, or mustyledger or journal of fading script in nook or corner, or from torn and crumblingletter and the recitals ot living witnesses the widely scattered facts of the by gone dayswill hardly be appreciated. To them stories of the faded past are, as naught. Theyhave little of the reverential feeling for the times when sire and grandsire were strug-gling in the days of manhood or womanliood to establish their homes and AN OLD FAIRFAX There are others tor whom these old time inernorials have an interest, a fascinationstrong, and abiding as life itself; who love to visit the plain, antiquated mansionsyet left as landmarks here and there at wide intervals over the land, who delight toloiter in the lanes and paths, and by the melancholy hearthstones, who will gatherwith reverential hand, a bud or a blossom or a leaf as they pass, and in so doing findsweet recompensing solace for their care. It is in the appreciation and reverence ofthese accordant spirits that our encouragement and reward must be.
