In any circular dress in which the radius of the furrow is equal to thedistance of the middle point of the furrow from the centre of the stone, thesine of half the angle of crossing of the furrows is equal to the radius vector, and the crossing angle increases toward the skirt. The angle of furrow crossing can be smaller with under than with upperrunners ; large crossing angle not being required at the eye, in order topermit the feed to enter easily and rapidly. The furrows of an under-runnershould make an angle at each point, with the path of the chop, greater thanthe friction angle of the material (which is about 37°), the sides of thefurrow being steep.
