Peidong Yang, nanotechnology scientist. Yang (born 1971 in China) is Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. His research group specialises in the synthesis of nanotubes and nanowires. These are artificially grown crystal compounds that measure just a few nanometres (billionths of a metre) in width and a few micrometres (thousandths of a metre) in length. Nanotubes and nanowires may one day be used to produce nanoscale electronic and photonic (control of light photons) devices, such as extremely small circuits, lasers, solar cells, switches and sensors.
