ALEXANDER PRESTON Ever since the days when Harford county, Maryland, was a tracklessforest, the Preston family had representatives in that part of the hundred and sixty years have passed since the first of the namesought a home in this country, and to narrate the family history would beto give the history of Harford county, so closely have its members beenconnected with the affairs of that section. The present member of thefamily under consideration, Alexander Preston, is one of the most distin-guished lawyers of Baltimore, who stands high in the regard of his pro-fessional brethren, and who, being a close student in his chosen calling,and applying the knowledge thus acquired with most remarkable success,. /^r^^^l^-j^Ctfa-^^ *^ ^— ^^^-U<,^ HISTORY OF BALTIMORE 775 well merits the enviable reputation which he holds. He is one, also, whowhile closely attending to his professional duties, has taken an active partin public life, making his mark as a man of fine judgment, and one whois shrewd, clear, decisive, and unselfish in his labors for the general good. The Preston family traces its ancestry in this country back to RichardPreston, known as Preston at Patuxent, and Thomas Preston of Calvertcounty, known as Thomas of the Cliffs, the appellation having been re-ceived from the patent of the Maryland land known as Hoopers seal of the family which has been in use as far back as the recordsgo, is as follows: Argent, unicorns head, sable; crest, out of a ducalcoronet unicorns head, proper; motto, Presto ut prestem. Following Richard and Thomas Preston, came another Thomas Pres-ton, and yet another, who was the father of James Preston,
