George Johnstone Stoney (1826-1911), Irish physicist. In 1874, Stoney proposed the charge on a hydrogen ion as the smallest unit of electric charge. He later termed this the electron. In 1897 an elementary particle with a negative charge was discovered by Thomson. This particle became known as an electron.
