King Alfred, aboutthe year 900, compofed a book of like nature ; of which this wasin fome meafure a copy. This work, according to the Red Book in the Exchequer, wasbegun, by order of William the Conqueror, with the advice of hisparliament, in the year of our Lord 1080, and completed in theyear 1086.
