Light microscopy of lymphoma of the human small bowel. Lymphoma of the intestine is a form of cancer involving excessive production of abnormal or cancerous white blood cells (lymphocytes). All regions of the normal intestines have lymphocytes that perform an essential role in immune defence against harmful microbes, toxins, and other infectious agents. At this very low magnification lymphocytes would only be seen in occasional lymphoid follicles. In lymphoma there is a massive and often widespread increase of malignant lymphocytes (purple tissues). Note further spread to the tissues external to the intestinal muscle layers. The cause/s of bowel lymphoma may be viral, celiac disease, or inflammatory disorders. Treatment may one of or a combination of surgery, chemo/radiotherapy. Magnification x6 when printed at 10 cm.
