On the same day hehelped the lesser Priesthood to lay thecorner stones of the Temple in SaltLake Cit5% being- the youngest memberof the Priesthood who took part inthese ceremonies. In 1863 he succeed-ed McGee Harris as president of theTeachers quorum, and occupied thatposition until the reorganization of theStakes in 1877. Agreeable to call fromthe authorities of the Church, he wenton a mission to the Green River coun-try in November, 1853, and thus be-came one of the founders of Fort Sup-ply. In December of that year he wasmarried. In the Avinter of 1857-58 heparticipated in the Echo Canyon ex-pedition. Elder Speirs was one of thefirst settlers of the Tenth Ward, andhas taken an active part in its localaffairs from the beginning until thepresent time. For many years he la-bored as a Ward teacher, was a mem-ber of the 25th quorum of Seventy,acted as counselor to Bishop Pette-grew, and finally, June 20, 1877, wasordained and set apart
