Knee ligament injuries, illustration. Three typical ruptures (red circles, from left): lateral collateral ligament (LCL), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). The collateral ligaments are also named for the lower leg bones they connect to: the LCL is also called the fibular collateral ligament, and the MCL is also called the tibial collateral ligament. The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is also visible here (behind the ACL), but has not ruptured. Injuries to these ligaments are relatively common sporting injuries, and surgery is needed to restore full function to the knee.
