In the lowerdiagram the magnet is in action, and the rays are coiledclock-wise into circles, none reaching the screen. The radium is contained in its mica-covered capsuleso that only the ^- and 7-rays are dealt with, the a-raysbeing suppressed. In the darkness you see the phosphor-escent screen brilliantly luminous so long as the magnetis not excited. I switch on the current and the light ofthe screen at once goes out almost completely. Thefaint luminosity left behind is due to the 7-rays, whichare not deviated at all, so far as we know, even by thestrongest magnetic forces. If I interpose a penny in MAGNETIC DEVIATION OF yS-RAYS 49 front of the radium so that the 7-rays have now totraverse it before reaching the screen the faint lumin-osity is hardly diminished. Now I switch off the excit-ing current and the magnet almost instantly loses itsmagnetism, the /3-rays spring back out of their circularinto straight trajectories, strike the screen and cause it SCREEN.
