View N of the tiny St Mary's Church, Capel-y-ffin, Powys, Wales, UK, surrounded by a ring of 7 ancient yew trees. Built 1762 as a chapel of ease for the church at Llanigon 6 miles NNW, now a Parish Church in its own right. At just 13x26ft inside it is one of the smallest churches in Wales. The porch was added in 1817. In his 1870 Diary, Vicar of Clyro Francis Kilvert describes St Mary's as "squatting like a stout grey owl among its seven great black yews". The church replaced an earlier C15th structure standing in the field where a Norman lady saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. Other visions of the Blessed Virgin were seen in & around Capel-y-ffin monastery across the road in the summer of 1880. As well as Georgian examples, there are several gravestones in the churchyard by Eric Gill who lived in the monastery in the 1920s.
