Marfan's syndrome. A double-jointed thumb in the hand of a patient with Marfan's syndrome. This is a rare genetic disorder of connective tissue (the material that surrounds body structures and holds them together). Affected people grow very tall and thin, with long spidery fingers. The chest and spine are often deformed, and joints are weak and prone to dislocation. Other common symptoms include abnormalities of the heart and dislocation of the lens in the eye. Death due to heart failure or rupture of an aortic aneurysm is common before the age of 50.
