Polyphemus is bringing firewood back to his cave, inside of which are the imprisoned Odysseus and his men.

In the epic poem Odyssey, which is credited to the Greek poet Homer, the hero Odysseus (also spelled Ulysses) and his men on their way home to Ithaca from the Trojan War are captured by Polyphemus, a Cyclops or one eyed giant. Polyphmus keeps the men imprisoned in his cave. In this early 1900s illustration, Polyphemus is bringing firewood back to his cave, inside of which are the imprisoned Odysseus and his men. Odysseus escapes by giving the Cyclops strong wine. The Cyclops falls asleep, and Odysseus blinds him and then makes it out of the giant's cave with his men.
