Within the germ the undeveloped (embryonic) stalk and root are contained. By cutting the kernel crosswise at the middle and lower quarter, these two parts may be pulled out whole (Fig. 18, Nos. 3 and 4). When the kernel is placed in a warm, moist place, the embryo stem and root begin to grow and burst through.
