Jan van de Velde, II. Landscape with a Round Tower. 1613–1641. Holland. Etching on cream laid paper Born in Rotterdam, Jan van de Velde II was an apprentice to Hendrick Goltzius’s stepson, Jacob Matham, in Haarlem in 1613. The following year, van de Velde joined his cousin Esias as a member of the artists’ guild of St. Luke. The earliest print series of his own design appeared between 1615 and 1616, but he is best known for his nearly five hundred prints after other artists.
