Mayo-born Sinead Diver has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after a brilliant seventh-place finish in the London Marathon. The 42-year-old, who now competes for Australia where she resides, led the women's race at the halfway stage and went on to clock a personal best 2 "That was real good fun," she said. "I wasn't expecting to lead, obviously. I made a joke about that yesterday. I was really freaked out and didn't want to look behind, I didn't know where everybody was! "That was the main goal for today (qualification for Tokyo). Marathon running in Australia is very strong at the moment but hopefully I have done enough to get there." Brigid Kosgei of Kenya went one better than last year with victory in the women's marathon. The 25-year-old, runner-up 12 months ago, left defending champion Vivian Cheruiyot and the rest of the field trailing in her wake with a blistering second half of the race, Kosgei made a break for home around the 20-mile mark but was quickly reeled in by Cheruiyot. However, with four miles to go Cheruiyot fell away again leaving her compatriot to add London to her Chicago triumph of last year. Cheruiyot came in second with Roza Dereje of Ethiopia third. Sinead Diver (born 17 February 1977) is an Irish-born Australian long-distance runner. She competed in the marathon event at both the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing and the 2017 World Championships in Athletics in London. Diver moved to Australia in 2002. She started running in 2010 after the birth of her eldest son. In 2012, she won the Australian Half Marathon Championship. Her debut marathon was the 2014 Melbourne Marathon, where she finished as the second-placed woman in a time of 2:34:15. As of October 2018 her marathon personal best time is 2, run at the Melbourne Marathon in October 2018. This time makes Diver the 4th fastest Australian female marathoner of all time, and fastest Australian female aged 40+.
