For many centuries ithas been the residence of the Huddlestons, an ancient andhonourable family, of the Roman Catholic faith. The mansionlies low, and is partially hidden by thickly-clustered cottagesand gardens. It is a large quadrangular building, erectedduring the reign of Queen Mary, under circumstances whichwe shall presently explain. It retains much of its originalcharacter, both externally and internally; and, although itcannot boast of great architectural beauty, it may be considered as a good exampleof the gable-ended style of the sixteenth century. The principal entrance is by a lowdoor-way, underneath a porch, leading into a spacious hall, paved with Ketteringstone and black marble, and lighted by two windows, exhibited in the appendedwood-cut, and a large bay-windowon the same side.* The wainscottinghas been stained to
