Adult.—Crown of the head dark slate, sharply demarcated from the white of the cheeks ; throat and neck all round also white, extending down to the upper part of the breast, where the white feathers form long overhanging plumes; mantle slaty-black, becoming silvery-grey on the scapulars and wing-coverts; primaries and secondaries, tail-coverts and tail black; the inner secondaries elongated and produced to beyond the level of the tail; below black throughout. Iris orange-yellow, bill light reddish-brown, warty skin at its base dull red, legs and toes black. Length about 560 ; wing 26'5, to end of longest secondaries 34'0 ; tail 11-0 ; culmen 7'0 ; tarsus 12-0 ; middle toe 5. A younger bird in the South African Museum has the skin at the side of the face merely corrugated, while the chin-lappets are.
