In Germany, also, the writers on politics attained under the influence of theEenaissance a high position at a somewhat earlier period than those did who wereoccupied with science or philology. But the German spirit remained untouchedby fantastic ideals. They were engaged in practical politics, and therefore came tostudy the older German history; the main object, indeed, was to grasp the idea ofthe German Empire and its development since Charles the Great and still furtherback. Dietrich von Nieheim, whose political ideal was Otto I, had already trod-den these paths. He was followed in them by Nicolaus Cusanus (d. 1464), anative of Cues on the Moselle, at once jurist and theologian, and after 1450Bishop of Brixen.
