Joint Genome Institute research. Researcher with 3730XL DNA analyzers at the Joint Genome Institute. Researchers are trying to sequence the three billion paired units that comprise the human genome, the genetic code that is crucial to understanding human development and countless human diseased with genetic roots. The JGI, founded in 1961, is a consortium of scientists from a number of US national laboratories, working on the largest biological undertaking in history, which promises untold opportunities to understand the basic molecular underpinning of life and to improve human health.
