The number of hearing impaired people in Bangladesh is about 3 million. Bengali sign language is most important in the unique and diverse life experience of hearing and speech impaired people. In view of the demands of the hearing and speech impaired people of the country to celebrate the 'Bangla Sign Language Day' to highlight the rights of the hearing and speech impaired people along with the recognition of sign language, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the recognition of Bengali sign language as one of the languages on February 1, 2009.
