Wishing to have some outside ex-perience he then requested a transfer to theerecting department, and he was sent to theHomestead Steel Works about the end ofthe famous strike, to assist in the erectionof new boilers. Later he had charge of suchwork, and spent six months as a mechanicon repair work, thus gaining a valuable ex-perience with boilers in actual service. From time to time during this period hehad been employed as an assistant in makingevaporative tests of boilers, and when theBabcock & Wilcox Co. began to develop itsmarine boiler, which has become such animportant factor in modern marine engi-neering, he was selected to conduct a seriesof experimental tests, with the object of THE ALUMNI 521 making- a thorough study of this generator, its performance with different fuels, methodsof handhng same, various styles of setting, etc. Other experimental work, such as circu-lation of water in boiler-tubes, methods of. E. H. Peabody sampling steam and testing its quality, strength of materials used in boiler-making,etc., was carried out under his direction, andlater a department of tests was estabHshedand he became its head. In this capacityand as the expert representative of the Bab-cock & Wilcox Co., Mr. Peabody has hadcharge of a great variety of engineeringwork, including trial trips of steam vessels, guarantee boilei trials, engine tests, and con-siderable experimental work. He has visitedCuba and travelled extensively in all partsof the United States, studying the localmethods of burning special fuels, such ascoal, lignite, oil, sawdust, rice chaff, etc. A liberal policy on the part of his em-ployers has enabled him to make what isprobably one of the most complete collectionsin existence of data covering the o
