An old engraving of the various prosthetic hands and arms used in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Illustrations show the differently designed prosthetics used to aid clasping, flexing and holding. Some of these were operated by other parts of the body – C shows two views of a ‘Selpho’ arm – a spring controlled by the opposite shoulder enables hand movements.

An old engraving of the various prosthetic hands and arms used in the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Illustration A shows a steel hand where rods that control the fingers can be operated by the wearer’s other hand. B is a device on the arm that can flex or extend the fingers of the artificial hand. C shows two views of a ‘Selpho’ arm – a spring controlled by the opposite shoulder enables hand movements. D illustrates two views of a detachable hand and a wrist-plate. The detachable hand in E allows for rotary movement of the wrist via a swivelling socket.
