Augustin Caron's execution. 1879 illustration showing the execution of Lieutenant-Colonel Augustin Joseph Caron in Strasbourg, France, in 1822. Caron was lieutenant-colonel in the French army during the Bourbon Restoration. He was also a member of the Charbonnerie, the French arm of the Italian Carbonari. An informal network of Italian secret societies active in Italy from around 1800 to 1831, the Carbonari were a focus for those unhappy with the repressive political situation in Italy following 1815 and they further influenced other revolutionary groups in France, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Brazil and Uruguay. Caron was executed for conspiracy in 1822.
