Hauptmann Joseph Oestermann was a Luftwaffe pilot shot down and killed on the first day of the Battle of Britain, 13th August 1940. Hauptmann translates as "captain". Oestermann was captain of a Ju88 bomber on "Eagle Day", the Luftwaffe's attempt to break the RAF in readiness for Operation Sealion, the Nazis all out effort to invade England. Two other members of the crew bailed out and were saved.
