Kyrgyz merchants at the bazaar in Murghab, the easternmost sizeable city in Tajikistan, in Badakhshan, near the Chinese border. During the Sovietization of Central Asia, many ethnicities like the Kyrgyz got split up amongst the many republics with borders designed to counter nationalism or ethnic unity. Today, many ethnicities are split amongst the various new Central Asian nations.
